Telemedicine application for genetic counseling in Extremadura
Main Article Content
Abstract
The use of telemedicine appears as very good potential option for optimizing genetic counseling within healthcare systems, however the role of the healthcare providers involved in this process is still unknown. Method: 20 professionals had
participated in 126 genetic counseling teleconsultations through the Extremadura public telemedicine network; the process has been characterized, the activity and the competence of the staff involved has been established, and the differences observed regarding the same face to face healthcare activity has been evaluated. Results: the 17 healthcare providers in charge of the telemedicine network pointed out the diversity of existing profiles and activities in the process of genetic counseling. The 3 geneticists
noticed the good conditions provided by the system for its coordination, with a multidisciplinary nature. Users agreed
that the service is easy to use, mainly for its understanding and efficiency. Conclusions: we consider that the tool improves the collaboration level of families and the accessibility of population groups with some degree of geographical isolation.
